The Digital Sovereignty Manifesto

The internet was decentralised, free, and ours. Then we handed it over — one "Sign up with Google" at a time.
We traded our data for convenience, our attention for dopamine, our servers for someone else's cloud.
It's time to take it back. And this site will show you how.
🚫
Delete Social Media

Every like and scroll feeds a machine built to manipulate you. Your attention is a product being sold. Close the accounts. Reclaim your focus, privacy, and time.

🔓
Go Open Source

Proprietary software is a black box. Open source is auditable, forkable, improvable. If you can read the code, you can own what it does. Build on foundations you can inspect.

🖥️
Self-Host Everything

Your files, messages, and media — why do they live on someone else's server? A cheap VPS or old PC gives you sovereign control. Create, host, own. No subscription. No ToS. No surveillance.

"The most radical thing you can do on the modern internet is run your own server."

★ Start Here — The Beginner's Path to Digital Freedom

🟢 New here? You don't need to be a sysadmin or a developer. If you can follow a recipe, you can self-host your own services. These step-by-step tutorials are written for complete beginners — no assumptions, no jargon left unexplained.
Suggested path for absolute beginners:
1. Switch your email to Proton or Tuta today — takes 5 minutes, costs nothing.
2. Learn how to rent a VPS and host your own website — the foundation for everything else.
3. Once comfortable with a VPS, move your email to your own server and go fully sovereign.

Why You Should Leave Social Media

⚠ THIS IS NOT A DRILL. Every platform you "trust" with your life has a business model built on harvesting your behaviour and selling your attention. You are not the user — you are the product. There is no Terms of Service clause protecting you from that.
Surveillance
Every post, reaction, and hesitation before deleting a draft is logged, analysed, and sold. You are a behavioural profile, not a person.
Algorithmic Control
An optimisation engine chooses what maximises your rage and time-on-site. You don't choose what you see. Your feed is a manipulation machine.
Data Hostage
Your photos, connections, and history are locked in. Platforms make export painful and import impossible. They own your digital life.
Centralised Failure
One company. One outage. One acquisition. Everything you built on their platform — audience, content, community — gone. Overnight.

Open Source Is Not Optional

If you can't read the source code, you are trusting a corporation's word about what software does to your machine and your data. Open source is not just ideology — it's epistemology. It's the only way to actually know.

"Free software is a matter of liberty, not price. Think free as in freedom." — Richard Stallman

Trusted VPS Providers

A VPS (Virtual Private Server) is your own slice of a server in a data centre — the foundation of self-hosting. Choose a provider in a jurisdiction you trust. These are providers I use or recommend. Some links are affiliate — they cost you nothing and help keep this site running.

💡 What to look for: Choose a provider in a country with strong privacy laws (Germany, Iceland, Switzerland). Avoid US-based providers if you can — CLOUD Act means US courts can demand your data without telling you.

Privacy-First Email & Messaging Providers

Not ready to run your own email server yet? Start here. These providers are a massive step up from Gmail or Outlook. They are end-to-end encrypted, privacy-respecting, and some have open source clients. Some links below are affiliate links — they cost you nothing.

📧 Email Providers
  • Proton Mail — Zero-Knowledge Email
Swiss-based. End-to-end encrypted. Open source apps. Zero-access encryption means even Proton can't read your mail. Free tier available. The easiest first step away from Gmail.
